Winter is the healthiest time to heavily prune your ornamental woody plants, and it is much easier to identify damaged or dead limbs that need removal after leaves have fallen. Other benefits to dormant pruning include less chance of infection from removing limbs, a more productive spring/summer bloom, and less potential for heavy spring snows to damage overgrown or weak limbs.
